Sr₂RuO₄ : a case of a remarkably “resistant” unconventional superconductor

Despite being one of the best investigated unconventional superconductors, Sr₂RuO₄ has resisted a coherent understanding for, by now, nearly 30 years. For a long time, it had been considered a prime example of chiral spin-triplet superconductor and only four years ago doubts have been cast on this apparently solid conclusion. While the newly propagated parity of the pairing state has spin-singlet nature, it poses considerable problems in finding the proper pairing symmetry compatible with the wide range of known experimental data. This colloquium strives to give an overview on the actual attempts and challenges to reconcile theoretical belief with the present status of experimental reality.
