Since the seminal discovery of superconductivity in F-doped LaFeAsO, iron-based compounds have provided us a rich playground to explore the mechanism of unconventional superconductivity in strongly-correlated electron systems. Trailing behind the cuprates, these compounds have the second highest superconducting transition temeprature. The microscopic “glue” of these superconductors that binds electrons into the Cooper pairs is still controversial and there have been hot debates on two possible scenarios. One is spin-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity, and the other is orbital-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity. In this talk, after a brief review on these two mechanisms and recent progress in first-principles methods to study unconventional superconductivity, I will discuss which scenario is more strongly supported by non-empirical calculations.
