Properties of materials, which are condensed forms of atoms and molecules, are truly emergent, as has been very properly phrased by Anderson as More is different. The history of research activities searching for functionality associated with electron transport is briefly summarized with special emphasis on doping into first band insulators and then Mott insulators. In this context expected roles of CEMS are placed. This talk is basically the English version of the presentation given in the opening symposium of CEMS, June 7, 2013.
